This rectangular umbrella stand with a geometric structure is attributed to Joseph Hoffmann and dates from the Vienna Secession era. The monochrome color scheme and the reduced geometric design are typical of the arts and crafts of this time. (Secession also secession; Latin secessio “splitting off”, “separation”) describes in art the turning away of a group of artists from an art direction that is no longer felt to be contemporary.
Apart from a serial number, the umbrella stand has no manufacturer’s stamp.
The object is attributed to the artist based on other sales advertisements. In the original state, the stand has a rattan covering on the upper handle. Unfortunately this is missing completely.
Unfortunately, the condition is not particularly good. The paint is chipping, the rattan is missing and it’s badly worn overall.
