Popularized at the turn of the 19th century in coastal Massachusetts, these handsome shelf clocks are subsequently referred to as Massachusetts shelf clocks. This decorated example is housed in a mahogany case with a scrolled broken pediment with brass eagle atop. The colorful elaborate églomisé panel stenciling is signed Aaron Willard. Boston at center. Other features include flamed grained mahogany borders with cross banned molding, a concave dial with Roman numerals and round ball bras feet. A beautiful example of early Americana.
“Aaron Willard (October 14, 1757 – May 20, 1844) was an entrepreneur, an industrialist, and a designer of clocks who worked extensively at his Roxbury, Massachusetts, factory during the early years of the United States of America.”
