Cast and Gilded Patriotic Eagle with Clipper Ship Plaque, with a Clutch of Arrows and an Olive Branch in it’s Talons, mid 20th Century, from a Boston Bank associated with the historic State Street Trust Bank. The Bellamy type spread-wing eagle holds the oval plaque which features a stern view of a square-rigged ship running downwind, another square-rigger approaching off the starboard bow, and a harbor defense battery, likely Fort Revere in Hull, off the port bow. There is a pencil inscription on the back stating ” Uphams Corner South Side.”
The piece is cast of some composition material, possibly a resin-epoxy or fiberglass but seems too light, and then gilded. A long bolt is embedded in the casting on the back. It remains in excellent overall condition, with only a few specks of gilding worn off here and there.
This eagle was one of two that were mounted on the outside of a former bank building in Uphams Corner in Dorchester (a corner building with an eagle facing each street). The second eagle is also available. Both remain suitable for mounting outdoors once again.
