This is a very rare poster for an exhibition of Sluijters’ work at the The Larensche Kunsthandel in 1916.
This exhibition poster is by Jan Sluiters.
Jan (Johannes Carolus Bernardus) Sluijters (1881 – 1957) who was a Dutch painter and co-founder of the Moderne Kunstkring (see below 1).
He was a leading pioneer of various post-impressionist movements in the Netherlands and experimented with several styles, including fauvism and cubism, finally settling on a colorful expressionism. His paintings feature nude studies, portraits, landscapes, and still lifes.
The Larensche Kunsthandel was founded in 1905 by Nico van Harpen (1858-1931) and specialised in contemporary Dutch art and represented painters from Laren and the surrounding area, in the tradition of Dutch Impressionism and the Hague School (see below 2).
1 – The Moderne Kunstkring or Modern Art Circle was a progressive artists’ club of Dutch artists founded in 1910 by the painter and critic Conrad Kickert and Sluijters.
It held it first exhibition in 1911 at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, exhibiting paintings by Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. Piet Mondrian, who also exhibited with Moderne Kunstkring, was so impressed by what he saw (including the first Cubist pictures publicly exhibited in the Netherlands) that he moved to Paris soon afterwards.
The society held comparably impressive exhibitions in 1912 and 1913 exhibiting works by Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, but its activities ended due to the First World War.
2 – In 1907 Nico van Harpen rented the ground floor of Herengracht 495 to organize exhibitions in Amsterdam.
While van Harpen managed the company Theo Neuhuys was responsible for the Amsterdam branch.
In June 1911, they organized an exhibition of works by Vincent Van Gogh. Sixty-nine works were presented though only some of were offered for sale.
Sadly, in May 1917, van Harpen decided to close the art dealership due to the war.
